Overview of Gold Commemorative Coins

In the beginning, let us distinction between a commemorative coin and a commemorative medal. United States commemorative coins have a designated face value and are legal tender, although they were primarily issued as commemoratives. Medals while collectable, have no designated denomination. TheCoinSpot.com at present, does not list "Metals".

Other than what has already ben mentioned in the first paragraph, there is no exact discription for a "Commemorative Coin", but, generally speaking, it is a coin which was struck with the intent of creating a souvenir which is to be sold above face value in order to commemorate a anniversary, special occasions, or a special event.

Such pieces differ considerably in denomination and design. Ocassionally they are similar to regular circulation strikes, however, they may also be very different. Gold and Silver are both normally used for base metals, however, that also, may vary.
